WHAT IS HUNGERFREE QUARTERLY?

Welcome to HungerFree Quarterly! We’re excited you’re joining us on the journey towards a hungerfree world. Through HungerFree Quarterly (or lovingly called HFQ), you’re part of a bigger community that comes together to learn, advocate, celebrate and take action so everyone has enough food for today and for tomorrow no matter where they live. This subscription box is just one way to do that through the products and impact built into your box and the experience you create with it!

WHY HUNGER?

Here’s what we’re looking at:

795 million people are hungry in our world. That means 1 in 9 people don’t have enough food to eat. Most of these are children. In a world of smartphones, self driving cars, and instant food delivery services, we think hunger is just plain unacceptable.

We’re some of the crazy ones who believe a world free of hunger is possible. And we think it’s possible in our lifetime. We’re not the only ones, the UN Sustainable Development Goals seek to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030.

HOW WILL WE END HUNGER?

Collaboration is key. World Vision, in partnership with governmental and developmental organizations, is innovatively building upon advancements in hunger alleviation to create solutions in emergency food assistance, better nutrition and long term solutions to creating hungerfree communities.

But guess what? The world has actually made a lot of progress in the last 50 years to tackling it.
  1. The number of hungry people in the world has fallen. Globally, there are more than 200 million fewer hungry people today than in 1990. Unfortunately, not every region of the world has progressed at the same rate and there are more hungry people in sub-Saharan Africa than twenty-five years ago.
  2. Worldwide, agriculture production has tripled over the last fifty years, due largely to advancements such as drought-and-disease resistant seeds, better fertilizers, and overall more productive and nutritious crops. Despite the improvement in agricultural yields, Africa imports $50 billion worth of food every year because its farmers do not have the same access to these improved resources.
  3. There is enough food to feed everyone. In fact, the world already produces enough food to feed more than 10 billion people, more than 1 1⁄2 times the world’s current population. And yet, one in nine people still lack access to enough of the right foods to live hungerfree.

We know we need new ways of raising money for this work. It’s too important to grow stagnant, so that’s where you and this box comes in.

HOW DOES HUNGERFREE QUARTERLY ACTUALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

HFQ is a new way to engage hunger alleviation and celebrate food in your everyday life. We’re testing this exclusively in Canada with just 250 boxes per quarter.

There are layers of world changing impact in each quarters’ box that come together to create experience:

PRODUCTS

Each box includes exclusive products sourced from companies that are challenging the status quo and believe in fair and ethical conditions. Each product is handmade by artisans that are paid fairly, work in healthy and comfortable conditions, and are provided with opportunities for a better future for them and their families. The products in each box work together to enhance your gathering experience. So you get a quality product that is also contributing to better livelihoods, free of hunger, for artisans around the world.

DONATION

Each box is improving lives by supporting World Vision’s innovative work to end hunger. After we paid those amazing partner companies for products, the profit goes directly to HungerFree programs in Kenya where World Vision is partnering with the UN’s World Food Programme to equip vulnerable young people with nutritious food they need today and agricultural and business skills and resources they need to be hungerfree for a lifetime.

CELEBRATION

Everyone loves food and eating together. Working towards a world free of hunger is worth celebrating, and we don’t have to guilt you into that. So when you gather together around your HungerFree Quarterly Box, we hope you celebrate the joy that comes from food, knowing that you are also contributing to creating that for other people. Even better if this joy ignites a movement in your community to act on hunger where you are and in the world around us.
